Isolated DC/DC Conversion

The topologies used to implement isolated DC/DC converters are similar to those used for AC/DC conversion. The requirements, however, for isolated DC/DC conversion are normally different:-

  • Input voltages are lower, typically 36Vdc to 75Vdc
  • Higher switching frequencies are used
  • Power density is higher

Many people opt for an off-the-shelf ‘brick’ or module solution to provide the DC/DC conversion function. These bricks can provide the highest performance available on the market but are also very expensive. A custom designed DC/DC converter does offer a lower BOM cost than an off-the-shelf brick and also gives the flexibility to trade-off cost and performance for a particular application. RD002 shown here is a 50W telecoms DC/DC converter and achieves a peak efficiency of 93% at very low BOM cost.

A custom designed converter gives the ultimate in solution flexibility and an overall reduction in system BOM cost.
